“The mother, baby and the family are vulnerable during this period of time. There is risk of malnutrition for both mothers and infants due to maternal energy depletion8. The mother may experience fatigue, discomfort in her breasts (engorgement) and leakage of milk (leaking). The baby will be at increased risk of infection due to inadequate intake of many nutrients that are most readily available in breast milk. This leaves the baby at increased risk of suboptimal growth, illness and death8. Some mothers may choose to use formula, which they can become highly dependent on. If they stop using it, their babies must be weaned off of it gradually over time8.”
It is recommended that women should breastfeed exclusively for around the first 6 months and then continue to breastfeed while introducing appropriate complementary foods. The mother should also be encouraged and supported to continue breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond6. Exclusive breastfeeding refers to not giving anything other than breast milk (no water, no juice, no other liquids) unless medically indicated. No solids are given either9. In this period of time the baby is breastfeeding regularly and gaining weight well10. When lactation ceases or decreases or there is a change in milk supply or composition then complementary feeding begins10.
